Celebrating the life of

Sharon (Shari) Butler Hendricks

February 13, 1964 - December 19, 2023

Sharon (Shari) Butler Hendricks

Sharon “Shari” Butler Hendricks, 61, died Tuesday, December 19, 2023 at home with her loving husband by her side.

The Gorman, TX native was the daughter of the late Eugene Edward Butler and Gwendolyn Clark Leathley. At the age of six, Shari  began competing in competitive roller skating. Shari competed in singles competitions, and later skated with her brother in pairs competitions. She and her brother Ron continued to compete over the next 10 years, and won many local, state, and national titles.

Shari was an active member of Compassion Christian Church - East Campus. Shari's main ministry focus was in children’s ministries. Shari was especially active with Sunday School, “Trunk or Treat”, and Summertime Vacation Bible School with her husband, Dwane. Shari and Dwane also took on leadership roles and teamed up for the annual “Walk to Emmaus”. Shari’s strong faith directed her to serve the Lord in multiple capacities. Shari was a leader, a mentor, and especially loved the children whose lives were undoubtedly impacted by her loving care.

Shari had a knack for crafts. From making blankets for new babies, care packages for Operation Yellow Ribbon, and school boxes for kids in need. Shari put her crafting skills to work for the benefit of those that needed it the most.

Most of Shari’s life, she was employed in the insurance industry. She started in the auto insurance industry in Columbus Ohio, but later switched to health care insurance. Shari was most recently employed by Optum Health Care in the medical billing department.

Surviving are husband, Dwane Hendricks; daughter, Jennifer Caskey; stepdaughter, Rachel Hendricks; mother, Gwendolyn Leathley; sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Mark Obenchain; brother, Ron Butler; and two nephews, Nathan and Jonathan Obenchain.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Compassion Christian Church East Campus. A Memorial service will immediately follow beginning at 12:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest you consider a donation in Shari’s memory be made to Compassion Christian Church Children’s Ministry, 9150 Old Montgomery Road, Savannah, GA 31406.

Dwane - Even though I had never had the pleasure of knowing Shari, I can tell she was an amazing person that I know was deeply loved and highly respected. She was a Christian with deep faith. Sherry and I will be praying for you and your family during this difficult time. “Depend upon it, your dying hour will be the best hour you have ever known! Your last moment will be your richest moment, better than the day of your birth will be the day of your death. It shall be the beginning of heaven, the rising of a sun that shall go no more down forever!” - C.H. Spurgeon

- Ron Anthony, Ooltewah , Tennessee

Shari was such a special person. I met her through 98.7 The River’s Christmas Wish program. She and her mom made stockings for each of the families every year and filled them with wonderful little surprises along with a lovely note. She had a way of helping others with these tiny gestures. As difficult as this time is for the family, I feel God must have needed a special angel for this Christmas. While we miss her, I’m sure she is continuing to help others in her special way.

- Bryna Gordon, Guyton, Ga

I met Shari at Optim and I quickly learned she had the biggest heart for Jesus and people. She was so creative and often used her ideas to bless others. I’m grateful I was able to get to know her. God bless you and comfort you as you grieve. She is in His loving care no doubt.

- Brittany Sekerak, North Royalton, Ohio

My condolences to the Hendricks family. I just met Shari in September during the Walk 2 Emmaus weekend. We got the opportunity to talk a little. She was so friendly and I kept telling her she looked like someone I knew. I guess it was God's spirit that was connecting us. I am so grateful to have met her. Her smile was so contagious and warm. My prayers to your family.
